The location of the site of the Chicago Spire, designed by world-renowned Spanish archiect Santiago Calatrava, is seen in Chicago, Illinois on October 21, 2008. Construction on the Chicago Spire ceased after two liens were filed against the developer Garrett Kelleher by Calatrava and architectural firm Perkins & Will, halting construction on a project that had captured the public imagination and leaving an enormous hole in the ground in downtown Chicago; money previously available to keep the project going has dried up because of the credit crunch.
