Former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev signed "the contract of the century" with a consortium of Western oil companies in 1994 to build the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline. The pipeline opened in 2005 and began delivering one million barrels of Caspian crude per day to world markets via the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan. The wealth resulting from Azerbaijan's second oil boom is redefining a region as the pipeline traverses Azerbaijan, Georgia and eastern Turkey.
